Frequently Asked Questions
Here's a list of common questions that we have been asked over the years. If you have some question that's WAY out there, don't hesitate to contact us via the "Contact Us" page or by going to our Facebook page and asking through there. The Facebook page can be accessed by clicking on the image on the right.
1) How do I join?
Easy! Just express your interest and grab a signup sheet from one of our committee members at our booth during Melbourne University Orientation Day, or simply drop by one of our supervised classes! (check Timetable for class times & venues)
2) How much do I need to pay for a class?
There are two methods of paying: either class-by-class, or for the full semester (12 classes)
Class-by-class for $12 per class.
You do not need to be a member for this option.
You must be a member to buy a semester pass. Membership costs $15 (or during O-Week, only $10) and also gives you plenty of other discounts to our other events. All semester passes are $75.
Semester passes are only valid for a single level and style. Purchasing a semester pass for Silver Latin, for example, gives you access to Silver Latin classes all semester (12 classes) but not other silver/intermediate classes.
3) How can I pay?
You can either pay with cash or credit/debit card in class, or if you'd rather do a bank transfer, visit this page for the instructions:
4) I don't have a partner! What should I do?
Relax! You don't need a partner to attend our classes! Feel free to grab a partner during any of your classes (or if you're shy, we'll help you!) and start dancing in a fun, relaxing environment! Classes usually rotate partners anyway so you'll end up with different partners eventually.
5) Can I try out the class for free on my first time?
If you are reading this during the first two weeks of semester then YES!
If not, then unfortunately you've missed out. Your options are to pay the casual rate of $12 for a class or sit in and observe a class.
6) Can I join a class halfway through a semester, or miss lessons during the semester?
Yes! You are very welcome to join a class at any point in the semester. Although we recommend you attend every lesson, if you have a clash, are swamped in work or are just feeling lazy and don't come, we won't hold it against you.
7) What if I have never danced before?
Any of our classes that are “Beginner/Bronze” OR not specified are great for first-time dancers! MUDC caters for all levels, even absolute beginners – we usually have a wide range of students with different levels of training and ability, so fear not if you haven't danced before!
8) I have done some dance before, what class level would suit me?
To get the best idea of your level compared to the class, come down and talk to our teachers. As a rule of thumb Beginner/Bronze classes cover basic steps and routines, so if you've done any similar styles try the Intermediate/Silver. If you have taken more than two medal tests, try our Advanced/Gold.
9) Can I switch classes or can I buy a semester of a mix of classes?
We don't sell semesters of mixed classes and we prefer that you don't switch classes. The reason is that it is disruptive to the teachers and other students if people chop and change regularly. But feel free to do more than one style, it's a great way to improve your dancing and get more involved in the MUDC community. Orientation weeks, the Dance Camp and all our Socials are also great ways to try out different styles.
10) Do you have classes in the evenings or the holidays?
Unfortunately not. Our classes run from week 1-12 inclusive (excluding university holidays). You can see all the classes we run in our timetable.
11) What should I bring/wear to class?
Comfortable clothes and shoes you can dance in, and a water bottle!
At our dance classes, you can wear anything you feel comfortable dancing in! Make sure your movement isn't restricted. Wear shoes that will stay on your feet, won't make you slip, and won't stick to the floor. If you have dance shoes, feel free to wear them!
12) What’s the difference between Bronze, Silver or Gold classes, compared to Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced.?
The classes which have Bronze, Silver and Gold are Medal classes, which means you focus on set routines (in usually three styles) for the semester, covering patterns and techniques. At the end of the semester you then perform the routines in front of judges, who give you feedback (you also get a nice little trophy!).
The classes which have Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced are more social dances and focus more on leading and following. These classes aim to get you to a level where you can go out and dance with somebody, even if you've never danced with them before and don't know a routine.
If you still can't decide, come and try both!
13) Are the teachers professionals or students as well?
All our teachers are professionals with plenty of experience teaching and in most cases performing or competing as well. Visit our Teaching Team page to find out exactly who will be taking each class.
14) I'm not a student at Melbourne Uni, can I still join?
Definitely! Melbourne University Sport stipulates that there is an membership additional fee of $56 for non-UoM but it is still worthwhile buying a membership if you plan on purchasing semester passes and attending our events.
15) How can I be kept updated about the Timetable and other events?
Search us on Facebook: "Melbourne University Dancesport Club" or contact us and ask to be added to the mailing list.
