Explore our list of frequently asked questions, compiled from years of inquiries.
1) How do I join?
Joining is easy! You can sign up for membership online here, visit our booth during Melbourne University Orientation Week, or drop by one of our supervised classes. Check our Timetable for class times & venues.
2) How much do I need to pay for a class?
We offer two payment options:
- Casual Pass: $20 (non-members) or $15 (members) per class.
- Semester Pass: $85 for members. Membership costs $20 (or only $10 during O-Week) and includes discounts to our events.
Semester passes are only valid for a single level and style. Purchasing a semester pass for Intermediate Salsa, for example, gives you access to Intermediate Salsa classes all semester (12 classes) but not the Beginner Salsa class or any other intermediate classes.
3) How can I pay?
You can pay online through: https://unimelbdc.square.site/
Otherwise, we also accept cash or credit/debit cards in class.
4) I don't have a partner! What should I do?
Relax! You don't need a partner to attend our classes! Classes usually rotate partners anyway so you'll end up with different partners eventually.
5) Can I try out the class for free on my first time?
If you are reading this during the first two weeks of semester then YES!
If not, then unfortunately you've missed out and will need to pay the casual rate of $20 (non-members) or $15 (members) for a class.
6) Can I join a class halfway through a semester, or miss lessons during the semester?
Yes! You are very welcome to join a class at any point in the semester. Although we recommend you attend every lesson, if you have a clash, are swamped in work or are just feeling lazy and don't come, we won't hold it against you.
7) What if I have never danced before?
Any of our classes that are “Beginner” OR not specified are great for first-time dancers! MUDC caters for all levels, even absolute beginners – we usually have a wide range of students with different levels of training and ability, so fear not if you haven't danced before!
8) I have done some dance before, what class level would suit me?
To get the best idea of your level compared to the class, come down and talk to our teachers. As a rule of thumb Beginner classes cover basic steps and routines, so if you've done any similar styles try the Intermediate.
9) Can I switch classes or can I buy a semester of a mix of classes?
We don't sell semesters of mixed classes and we prefer that you don't switch classes. The reason is that it is disruptive to the teachers and other students if people chop and change regularly. But feel free to do more than one style, it's a great way to improve your dancing and get more involved in the MUDC community. The first two weeks of free classes and all our Socials are also great ways to try out different styles.
However, if there are any special circumstances, please let us know via email or the "contact us" tab, and we can discuss how to go around it!
10) Do you have classes in the evenings or the holidays?
Unfortunately not. Our classes run from week 1-12 inclusive of the university semesters (excluding university holidays). You can see all the classes we run in our timetable.
11) What should I bring/wear to class?
Comfortable clothes, shoes you can dance in and a water bottle!
At our dance classes, you can wear anything you feel comfortable dancing in! Make sure your movement isn't restricted. Wear shoes that will stay on your feet, won't make you slip, and won't stick to the floor. If you have dance shoes, feel free to wear them!
12) Are the teachers professionals or students as well?
All our teachers are professionals with plenty of experience teaching and in most cases performing or competing as well. Visit our Teaching Team page to find out exactly who will be taking each class.
13) I'm not a student at Melbourne Uni, can I still join?
Definitely! Melbourne University Sport stipulates that there is an membership additional fee of $56 for non-UoM members but it is still worthwhile buying a membership if you plan on purchasing semester passes and attending our events.
14) How can I be kept updated about the Timetable and other events?
